Jessie Atutolu Tulisi - Siva Samoa Expert & Weaver
Jessie Atutolu Tulisi is Niuean, Samoan and Tongan. She grew up in Point Chevalier, Tāmaki Makaurau and now resides in Blockhouse Bay. Not only is Jessie a dancer, but she is also a weaver. Constantly seeking cultural connection, Jessie prioritises cultivating māfana* in creative spaces. Whether she is teaching Siva Samoa or gossiping in a Niuean weaving group, Jessie is bringing the VIBES!
Teaching Siva Samoa and learning to weave has solidified Jessie's confidence to lead. Jessie wants to immerse tama’ita’i (children) in their cultures and illuminate their languages in doing so. Her dedication to strengthening her own foundations is infectious. As she choreographs to Samoan lyrics, she studies their meanings. When she sits in weaving circles with Niuean women, she mirrors their movements. Then, Jessie imparts these ancestral gifts to the next generation.
Her own learning enables her to enhance the learning of others. And so, the cycle continues. Our stories endure because we share them. We grow because we feed each other. Jessie is a living example of the reciprocal nature of learning, and the way that cultural connection can enrich communities.
Jessie’s advice to young Pasifika leaders is to “keep looking, keep learning and stay vibes.” She believes that it is important for Tagata Moana to reach out to their communities as they deepen their cultural knowledge. Surrounding herself with people who support her journey makes all the difference.
*Māfana is an energetic, emotive and/or spiritual warmth that is often shared between multiple people.
