George Tyrell - Deputy Principal of Christ the King Catholic School

George Tyrell is the Deputy Principal of Christ the King Catholic School in Mount Roskill, Aukilani. When he isn’t at school, he is often at Life Church where he contributes to the Creative Worship Team as a bass guitarist. As a mentor and a musician, George uplifts communities and inspires individuals to nurture their passions.

As a high school student, George’s interest in academia was inconsistent. Just as his enthusiasm began to wane, George found purpose in tutoring his nephew. Once he discovered that working with tamariki came naturally to him, George directed his efforts towards becoming a qualified kaiako. Taking this step gave him the opportunity to flourish as a musical, student-centred leader.

George recalls a few animated teachers who kept him motivated during his school years. In their classrooms, learning seemed like an exciting frontier to explore rather than a terrifying cliff to jump off. They valued reciprocal relationships and unique, multifaceted learners. These teachers gave George an example to follow as he embarked on his own teaching career.

George’s advice for young people is to think about who they want to be and what they have to offer. He believes that every person brings valuable talents and knowledge to their village, even if they do not see themselves as academics. Whether you are a midnight gamer, a weekend drummer or a kaitiaki of your culture, you could be the right person to help someone else to find their voice.
