Welcome to the fifth issue of Nu’u Newsletter.
I created this weekly publication with the intention of facilitating meaningful connections between Moana communities and creative opportunities for learning, collaboration and cultural nourishment. My hope is that Nu’u Newsletter draws you closer to the people, places and experiences that feed you. We eat better when we’re together.

Samoan teacher Mareta Percival is struggling following a huge personal loss in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Reluctantly taking on the role of substitute teacher at an elite, wealthy private school - she is surprised to find children crying out for guidance, inspiration and love.
Using the symphony of her culture to empower her students, she forms a choir, bringing them together while unexpectedly rediscovering her passion again for being a teacher and mother.

- Submissions are now open for the final issue of Overcom.
“We are seeking poetry, prose, and art for this issue. Unlike previous submission rounds, we ask that you submit one piece only. Pick your best, and send it our way.”
- Mānoa Journal invites submissions for the first 2025 Mānoa Journal Writing Contest in Fiction and Poetry.
The Fiction contest will be judged by Megan Kamalei Kakimoto with the First Prize Fiction Winner receiving $500 and publication, and the Runner Up Fiction receiving $250 and publication. The Poetry contest will be judged by Mai Der Vang with the First Prize Poetry Winner receiving $500 and publication, and the Runner Up Poetry receiving $250 and publication. The 2025 contest will open on February 15, 2025 and close on April 15, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. HST. Results will be announced in September 2025. Winning entries will be published in the Summer 2026 issue, which comes out in June.

- Window Gallery is now accepting proposals for 2025. Applications close at 5pm on the 14th of February.
